چکیده

The existence of methane in the martian atmosphere may be an indicator of subsurface life. Biological processes are known to fractionate the common isotopologues of methane, and hence measuring these isotopic ratios may yield constraints on the nature of the methane source. Any measurement of the isotopic ratios of atmospheric methane must consider the additional fractionation due to photochemistry in order to quantify the isotopic ratios of the source. We find that photochemical processing of the methane family in the atmosphere has a small (4.5h) contribution to δC(CH4) but has a large (90h) contribution to δD(CH4). Modelled isotopic fractionation and transient diffusive release of methane from potential subsurface sources on Mars

We calculate transport timescales of martian methane and investigate the effect of potential release mechanisms into the atmosphere using a numerical model that includes both Fickian and Knudsen diffusion. The incorporation of Knudsen diffusion, which improves on a Fickian description of transport given the low permeability of the martian regolith, means that transport timescales from sources c...

Stable Carbon Isotope Fractionation by Methanogens

Introduction: Methanogenic archaea, which consume CO2 and H2, have been considered models for possible life forms on Mars for a long time, even before the discovery of methane in the Martian atmosphere (1-8). Several intensive experimental studies have been conducted to investigate survivability of methanogens under conditions that approach those found on Mars (2, 3, 9). Various potential sourc...

Isotopic Evidence for a Martian Regolith Component in Martian Meteorites

Introduction: Noble gas measurements in gas-rich impact-melt (GRIM) glasses in EET79001 shergottite showed that their elemental and isotopic composition is similar to that of the Martian atmosphere [1-3]. The GRIM glasses contain large amounts of Martian atmospheric gases. Those measurements further suggested that the Kr isotopic composition of Martian atmosphere is approximately similar to tha...

Growth of Methanogens on Different Mars Regolith Analogues and Stable Carbon Isotope Fractionation during Methanogenesis

Introduction: The detection of methane in the Martian atmosphere (1-4) and the probability of the existence of liquid water during the early history of Mars (5-10) prompted enthusiasm about plausible life forms on Mars. The half-life of methane in a planetary atmosphere is about 300 years (11), so in order to be detected on Mars, methane would need to be replenished continuously. Several potent...

Shock-induced devolatilization and isotopic fractionation of H and C from Murchison meteorite: some implications for planetary accretion

Incipient shock-induced devolatilization of Murchison meteorite occurs upon subjecting samples to a minimum shock stress, or pressure, of about 5 GPa. This pressure is similar to that required to initiate devolatilization of 20% porous serpentine. Upon low velocity impact (6 1.5 km/s) the solid shocked products were combusted and isotopic analysis of the resulting H2O and CO2 was performed. H a...
